EQUIPMENT AND ADVANCEMENT

Mortisphere is a universe built from the remains of everything that came before.

Nothing is truly new.

Every weapon, tool and piece of equipment has a history. Some were created by civilizations that vanished before the current inhabitants existed. Some were built from scraps of forgotten machines. Some were grown, adapted or altered by things that no longer resemble their original forms.

Your crew survives by finding what remains and deciding how to use it.

EQUIPMENT

Equipment represents anything that changes what a crew member can do.

This may include:

- Ancient weapons. - Recovered technology. - Industrial tools converted for war. - Biological adaptations. - Protective equipment. - Relics from forgotten civilizations. - Objects whose original purpose has been lost.

Equipment is not limited by a single technological age.

A Mortisphere battlefield may contain a rusted blade beside a weapon capable of cutting through reality itself.

Both are simply tools left behind by the dead.

ACQUIRING EQUIPMENT

Equipment is gained through the campaign.

A crew may obtain equipment through:

- Completing scenarios. - Exploring locations. - Defeating enemies. - Trading in Last Light. - Discovering forgotten places. - Making choices during the campaign.

Not every discovery is useful.

Not every weapon should be trusted.

Some things were abandoned for a reason.

IMPROVING CREW MEMBERS

A crew member changes through survival.

A being that survives enough battles will rarely remain exactly as it began.

Advancement may come through:

- New equipment. - Increased power. - New abilities. - Alterations to their existence. - New relationships. - Permanent consequences.

A crew member does not improve because they gain experience points.

They improve because something happened to them.

EXISTENCE GROWTH

A crew member's Existence Die represents their current potential.

Through the campaign, certain members may become greater than they were when first recruited.

A small survivor may become a hardened veteran.

A damaged machine may be rebuilt with forgotten technology.

A Mycelian host may become something entirely different from the body it first inhabited.

Growth is not guaranteed.

The final age does not care about potential.

Only survival creates change.

LOSS AND CHANGE

Advancement is not always positive.

The same events that make a crew member stronger may also change them permanently.

A weapon may grant incredible power but come with consequences.

An alteration may increase capability while removing something that once made the being unique.

A survivor may become stronger while becoming less like the thing they were before.

In Mortisphere, nothing remains untouched.

LAST LIGHT

Last Light serves as the primary hub for a crew's advancement.

Within its failing walls, crews may find:

- New recruits. - Equipment. - Opportunities. - Information. - New contracts.

Last Light does not offer safety.

It offers possibilities.

For some, that is enough.

For others, it is simply another place to find something worth fighting over.

THE HISTORY OF A CREW

The purpose of advancement is not to create the strongest possible crew.

A perfect crew has no scars.

It has no stories.

The greatest crews of Mortisphere are not remembered because they were flawless.

They are remembered because, against every reasonable expectation, they continued.
